Can you co-sleep and sleep train?

Can you co-sleep and sleep train?

I get it. I really do. That primal and uncontrollable impulse to stay close to your baby is so deeply rooted in our DNA that it’s almost frightening sometimes. I have plenty of friends who co-sleep and who swear by it. And I say, if they enjoy it and they’re doing it safely, co-sleep your heart out. But I’ve spoken to more than a few parents who are big on co-sleeping but are still being woken up by feet in their face or thumbs in their eyes several times a night and want to know if sleep training will get their little ones to stop squirming or waking up fifteen times a night to nurse.

Teach your toddler to stay in their room all night

A toddler leaving their bedroom may sound harmless, but if it happens often enough, it can be every bit as hard on parents and children as constant night waking. And toddlers can be incredibly persistent when they’re trying to get their way. So, how do we get a toddler to stay in their room without letting the situation escalate?

Is Melatonin Safe for Kids?

Is Melatonin Safe for Kids?

When I was a kid, my grandfather had a book called, “The Doctors Book of Home Remedies.” I would go to visit and he would tell me all about the latest home remedies he had tried. Even as a child, I have to admit, I was intrigued. Try rubbing aspiring on a bee sting. Quiet a colicky baby by running the vacuum cleaner. Swallow a teaspoon of sugar to cure your hiccups. I’m not sure what it is that I found so fascinating about curing ailments with common objects they had lying around the house, but obviously I wasn’t the only one. So, what about Melatonin as natural way of helping your little one get to sleep?

Snoring, mouth-breathing and sleep: when to see your doctor

Snoring, mouth-breathing and sleep: when to see your doctor

I used to think that snoring babies were absolutely adorable. As a mother, the sight of your baby sleeping means they’re relaxed, feeling safe, and content with everything around them. I used to think a little snore seemed harmless and cute. Unfortunately, that sense of peace I used to get at the sound of a snoring baby turned out to be misconstrued.

How Sleep Deprivation Impacts Your Relationship

How Sleep Deprivation Impacts Your Relationship

What is it about you having a lousy night’s sleep that makes everyone else so awful? It seems that way, doesn’t it? I’m not saying that’s not a possibility, but a more likely explanation is that your lack of sleep is making it impossible for you to react rationally to frustrating situations. We all know the many ways sleep deprivation impacts our mood and our health but something that is less talked about is how it can impact your relationship.

Can you successfully sleep train while breastfeeding?

Can you successfully sleep train while breastfeeding?

As many parents do, I did a ton of reading and research on all things related to having a baby when I was expecting my first child. I took in all the information I had read, analyzed it, filtered everything through a combination of common sense and personal beliefs, and came up with a strategy I was comfortable with. But one thing I was never sure about, mainly because nobody seemed to have a clear answer, was whether I could sleep train while I was breastfeeding. Well, here is the information you need to decide if sleep training and breastfeeding can coincide.

Is your baby hungry at night or just lacking independent sleep skills?

Is your baby hungry at night or just lacking independent sleep skills?

If your baby is waking seven or eight times a night and insisting that you come in and rock her back to sleep, it can have a serious impact on everybody’s sleep. A lot of babies have developed a dependency on nursing, rocking, sucking, and so on, to get to sleep, and it’s not something they can overcome in 15 or 20 minutes. Attachment Parenting and Sleep Training - Can they co-exist?

Attachment Parenting and Sleep Training - Can they co-exist?

There's a commonly held belief among the devotees of attachment parenting that sleep training isn't compatible with their parenting style. That's not surprising, since one of the founders of the attachment parenting movement, Dr. Bill Sears, amended the core principles of his system to include "Beware of baby trainers." But having worked with parents who subscribe to this approach, I have found that there's plenty of room for compromise. You can stick to every fundamental rule of the attachment parenting model and still teach your baby the skills they need to sleep through the night. You can even "beware" of baby sleep coaches, but by the time you finish this blog post, I'm confident that you'll find us to be a caring, helpful lot, who only want to help you and your little one get the sleep you need.

The Four Month Sleep Regression

The Four Month Sleep Regression

As a certified sleep consultant, I hear the term “regression” used in regards to just about every imaginable circumstance. Essentially, if baby doesn’t sleep well for a couple of nights, parents start dropping the ‘R’ word. The good news for anyone experiencing the dreaded Four Month Sleep Regression is that it’s not, in fact, a regression at all. A regression is defined as “reversion to an earlier mental or behavioral level,” and that’s actually the opposite of what your baby is experiencing. This would be much more aptly titled the “Four Month Sleep Progression”. So, onto the big question. What can you do to help your little one adjust?

Do you have a chronic cat napper? Help your baby nap longer with this guide.

Your baby wakes up in the morning after a solid night’s sleep. You feed her, change her, play with her for a little bit, take her for a little walk outside, then rock her to sleep and put her gently into her crib for her morning nap.

Thirty minutes later she wakes up fussy and irritable, and despite your pleading, bargaining, and offers of riches, refuses to go back to sleep.

After half an hour of trying to put her back down, you finally give in, hoping she’ll be that much more tired when her afternoon nap rolls around, only to have the exact same scenario play out again, and baby is a cranky ball of unhappiness for the rest of the day.

Does this sound familiar?

Hoping for silent nights this holiday season

With the holidays fast approaching, many parents who have recently gotten their babies sleeping on a schedule are worried that they might regress a little over the holidays.
